The garden is one of the largest in the world and features the latest English roses collection.

What is English Rose?

• 
• “English Rose” is a generic name for roses created by UK breeder David C. H. Austin.
  It is a relatively new brand that came to attention in the 1970s.
  The English rose combines the best of both worlds: the lovely and fragrant old rose and the modern rose with its rich color and four-season blooming.
  Its characteristics are “rich fragrance,” “beautiful flower shape,” “disease resistance and hardiness,” “good repeatability,” and “versatility.
  In 2009, a beautiful yellow English rose named “Graham Thomas” was recognized by the World Rose Council as a Hall of Fame inductee.

David Austin has been growing roses since he was a boy, and in 1961 he introduced his first “Constance Spray” rose to the world.
He then founded David Austin Roses in 1969.
The original varieties bloomed only once, from spring to early summer, but from 1969 onward, the company created a series of varieties with repeat blooming characteristics, such as “Wife of Bath” and “Canterbury”.
He is also the same generation as Queen Elizabeth II, who died in 2022, and dedicated the “Golden Celebration” rose on the 40th anniversary of her accession to the throne, the “Jubilee Celebration” rose on the 50th anniversary, and the “Royal Jubilee” rose on the 60th anniversary.
For his contributions to horticulture, he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2007. He produced more than 190 varieties of English roses in his lifetime and passed away in 2018 at the age of 92.

Let’s go to the David Austin Rose Garden in Sennan City!

David Austin Rose Gardens exists only here in Sennan City, Japan, outside of the UK.
The garden is divided by theme, with English rose vines entwined in arches and obelisks decorating various areas.
Among the highlights is an area inspired by the Renaissance Garden at the UK headquarters, with a clear stream flowing down a gently sloping hillside.
There are areas planted with garden trees such as Japanese maples and Scarlet bottlebrush, as well as arrangements with perennial plants, which may provide some inspiration for garden design.
The “Rose Festival” is held during the peak period of rose blooming in spring and fall.

• The garden includes a plant center where David Austin roses are available for purchase.
  Many of the roses planted in the garden are handled here, and the potted rose plants are carefully nurtured and ready to be taken home and planted.
  They are happy to answer questions and provide consultation on how to grow roses, so even beginner gardeners can feel at ease.
  During the Rose Festival, the center also offers a hands-on potting class.

• Gift and Garden Shop

  This store offers a wide range of gardening supplies and David Austin’s exclusive soil and fertilizers.
  Other rose goods available for purchase include bath and body care products using rose essential oil, ceramics, artwork, and other rose goods that make great gifts.

Biannual Rose Festival.

Celebrate the arrival of spring with English Roses.

Around May each year, the David Austin Rose Collection of more than 3,000 plants is in full bloom.
The Rose Garden will hold the Rose Festival twice a year, in spring and fall.
During the festival, the hours of operation are expanded to include weekends and holidays.
Also, from May 12 (Fri.) to May 31 (Wed.), the popular cafe BARBARA COFFEE in front of Izumisunagawa Sta. will be open for a limited time.
Delicious coffee and sandwiches are sold in the garden.
A variety of desserts such as donuts and ice cream are also available.
In addition, in 2023, the 3rd ROMANTIC ROSE PARTY will be held on Monday, May 22. Many kitchen cars and handmade craft stores will be open for one day only.

English Roses encountered in the garden.

ACCESS

The nearest railroad station is Izumisunagawa Sta. on the JR Hanwa Line. If you are using the Nankai Railway, the nearest station is Tarui Sta.
During the Rose Festival, from May 13 (Sat.) to May 28 (Sun.), 2023, a paid shuttle bus will run from these two stations.
